Utility emergencies and out of hours service
If you smell gas
If you smell gas, it's crucial to act quickly and stay safe.
Immediate actions
- open windows and doors to ventilate the area
- turn off the gas supply at the mains tap (usually near the meter), if it's safe to do so
- avoid flames and sparks: do not smoke, light matches, use a mobile phone, or use electrical switches
- evacuate the property and ensure everyone else leaves
Call for help
- Contact the National Gas Emergency Service immediately on 0800 111 999 (available 24/7 and free to call)
- Follow the advice given by the emergency operator
- Wait outside for the emergency engineer to arrive
After you have called National Gas Emergency Service, call us on 020 8726 6101 to report the issue for an emergency call out. Do not go back into the property until advised to do so.
If you feel unwell
- Symptoms like dizziness, nausea, headaches, or fatigue may indicate exposure to gas or carbon monoxide

- Seek medical attention and let them know you may have been exposed to a gas leak
