How council tenants can pay their rent, get payment advice, and find out more about rent and service charges.

Request a rent refund

If you have overpaid your rent and your account is in credit, you can request a refund.

At least 4 weeks' rent must be left on your account. Your credit balance must be above this amount to request a refund.

Check your rent balance

To check your rent balance, sign in to your housing account. If your account is in credit, you will see a minus sign (-) before your rent balance.

Who can request a refund?

A current or former tenant can request a refund on a rent account.

You can only request a refund on behalf of the rent account holder if one of the following applies:

  • you are a joint account holder and share responsibility for the rent account, we may ask for written consent from all named account holders before we issue a refund
     
  • you are managing the estate of someone who has died and are the executor, administrator or solicitor, you will need to provide a death certificate, and a grant of probate or letters of administration
     
  • you hold a registered Power of Attorney for someone who cannot manage their own affairs
     
  • you are an official appointee authorised by the council or the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to act on the account holder's behalf
     
  • you are an authorised representative and have written permission from the account holder, such as a signed Authority to Act form or letter

After you request a refund

Once we receive your refund request, it will be reviewed. We will also carry out checks on your rent account and housing benefit before approving your refund.

If your request is approved, we will send the refund to the bank account you've provided.
