Prepare for a gas inspection
Before the appointment
You should:
- clear the area around gas appliances so the engineer can access them easily
- ventilate the space by opening windows, if possible, especially near the appliances
- secure pets in another room to avoid distractions or accidents
- have someone home who’s over 18 to allow access and discuss any concerns
During the service
You should:
- verify the engineer’s ID: they should be Gas Safe registered and carry official identification
- stay nearby in case the engineer needs to ask questions or point out issues
- avoid using gas appliances while the inspection is underway
- report any concerns you’ve noticed, like strange smells or appliance behaviour, or yellow flames
After the service
You should:
- ask for a service record or safety certificate if applicable
- follow any recommendations the engineer give, especially if repairs or replacements are advised
- know the signs of carbon monoxide poisoning
If you ever smell gas or suspect a leak, leave the property immediately and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.
