London Borough of Croydon

Lining your caddy

You do not need to line your small 7 litre capacity kitchen caddy at all but if you do then you will need to use a compostable material to line it and not plastic bags. By lining your caddy it will help keep it clean and odour free though the decision is yours. You can line your kitchen caddy with either:

  • An approved compostable food waste liner, or
  • Newspaper or kitchen roll.

Please do not use plastic bags with your food waste collection as they do not break down quickly enough during the recycling process.

Compostable food waste liners

If you choose to line your caddy there are a range of retail outlets where liners are available. Croydon Council does not endorse any particular brand or supplier, although you will need to ensure any you buy are 100% compostable. These liners are generally made out of corn starch, potato starch or paper and are certified BS EN 13432:2000. The liners will also carry one of the following logos:

compostable logo - black Compostable logo - green

Some plastic bags are sold as biodegradable, but this does not mean they will break down quickly enough during the recycling process, so only use bags which carry the correct logos.
