Localism Act

The Localism Act sets out a programme of change which the government believes will transfer power from centralised government to local people on many things which directly affect their lives.

These pages will be updated with information on how these changes affect Croydon and the measures the council is putting into place to implement them locally.

The government has published a Plain English Guide to the Localism Act which summarises the main measures under four headings:

  • New freedoms and flexibilities for local government.
  • New rights and powers for communities and individuals.
  • Reform to make the planning system more democratic and more effective.
  • Reform to ensure that decisions about housing are taken locally.
