Club premises certificate

Sports and social clubs where alcohol or entertainment are provided require a club premises certificate.

After you've applied

Once your application is received you may receive a visit from a licensing officer. If representations are received from a responsible authority or interested parties within the 28 day consultation period, a hearing will be arranged within 56 days from the date the application is made.

Issuing your certificate

Yes, after the 28 day consultation period has expired if no representations have been received the certificate is granted as applied for. The certificate will be issued to you shortly after.

Once granted the certificate is valid indefinitely but is subject to an annual fee which is due one year after the grant of the certificate.

Review of an existing certificate

If there are problems concerning a premises that has been granted a club premises certificate, you can ask for a review of the licence.

If you object to a licensing application

Representations against an application for a new club certificate or a variation of an existing certificate may be made by 'interested parties'. These include local residents or businesses who may be affected by club activities.

The representation must be submitted by letter or email to the licensing team below within 28 days of the submission of the application. See the current licensing applications being processed.

Your representation must relate to one of the four following licensing objectives:

  • the prevention of crime and disorder
  • public safety
  • the prevention of public nuisance
  • the protection of children from harm

Failed applications

A failed applicant will receive notice of the refusal of an application for a certificate or variation of a certificate.

If an application is rejected, the applicant may appeal the decision. Appeals must be made to the Croydon Magistrates Court, Barclay Road, Croydon CR9 3NG within 21 days of the decision.

Licence holder appeals 

If a variation application is refused, the licence holder can appeal. A licence holder can appeal against a decision to put conditions on a certificate or to exclude any club activity. Appeals may also be made against the variation of any condition.

A club may appeal against the withdrawal of a certificate. Appeals must be made to the Croydon Magistrates Court, Barclay Road, Croydon CR9 3NG within 21 days of the decision.
