If the person died in a house or hospital, the death can be registered by:

a relative
someone present at the death
an occupant of the house where the death took place
an official from the hospital where the death took place
the person making the arrangements with the funeral directors

If the death took place anywhere else, the death can be registered by:

a relative
someone present at the death
the person who found the body
the person in charge of the body
the person making the arrangements with the funeral directors

Who can register a death
Find out who can arrange the registration of a death if the person died in a house, hospital or somewhere else.
Information you need to provide
You will need to provide documents in relation to the deceased, the medical certificate of cause of death and funeral details.
Book an appointment at Croydon Register Office
You can book an appointment via our online form.
Notify organisations and departments of the death
After you register the death, you will need to notify many organisations and departments. You can do this by using the government's Tell Us Once service.
