Cremation services

A funeral ceremony usually occurs prior to the cremation. The committal part of the ceremony needs to be considered carefully, as some people might be upset over what happens. 

During the ceremony, the coffin rests on the catafalque, a name used for the stage upon which a royal coffin was placed. At the point of committal in the ceremony, the coffin either sinks from view (west chapel) or or the velvet curtain can be closed to obscure the coffin (east chapel).

Alternatively, if you find the entire committal ceremony too upsetting, the coffin can remain in place and no curtains need be drawn, so the coffin is always in view. If you use a minister, you should ensure they are aware of this wish.

Many people also arrange a short graveside service, particularly if mourners are attending who could not attend the crematorium service, however this is optional. Your funeral director can arrange a minister for you or you can make this approach yourself. We can advise you if you prefer to arrange a non-religious service or want a family member or friend to take the graveside service.
