Licence summary

If you sell animals from a commercial premises or via the internet, you will need a licence from the council.

Eligibility criteria

The licence is valid from 1 January to the 31 December.

Applicants for a pet shop licence must not be disqualified from keeping a pet shop.

How to apply

If you are applying for a new licence please download the application form and once completed send it to the licensing team at the address below.

Do not send any payment with the application as this will be apportioned depending on the date the application is made.

Application evaluation process

Once your application is received, a licensing officer will contact you to make arrangements to carry out an inspection of your premises. The officer may be accompanied by an approved vet.

The apportioned licence fee will also be collected at the time of the inspection.

The purpose of the inspection is to ensure the premises meet the standards required by the "Rules of management for pet shops". Click on the download below to view a copy of the rules.

Will tacit consent apply?

No. Your licence will only be issued to you when all the necessary inspections/checks have been carried out and the premises meet the required standards.

The licence may also list additional site specific conditions.

Renewal of a licence

If you already hold a licence you will automatically be sent a renewal letter approximately one month before the expiry date, you can pay the renewal fee on line.

Failed application redress

Any person who is refused a licence can appeal to the Croydon Magistrates Court, Barclay Road, Croydon CR9 3NG.

Licence holder redress

Any licence holder who objects to any of the licensing conditions attached to a licence may appeal to the Croydon Magistrates Court, Barclay Road, Croydon CR9 3NG.
