If you're homeless, at risk of homelessness or living in temporary accommodation, we may be able to give financial and practical support, once you've found a privately rented property.

Finding your own home gives you more choice about where you live and means you do not have to wait for a social housing property to become available. 

If you find a suitable private rented property, we may be able to provide practical and financial support to help you secure the tenancy.

How it works

1. Find a property

There are many ways to find a private rented home. You can:

  • search property websites such as Rightmove, Zoopla, OpenRent and OnTheMarket
  • contact local letting agents to ask about available properties
  • ask family, friends, work colleagues or previous landlords if they know of homes to rent
  • check local notices adverts in shops, libraries and community centres
  • join local social media groups where properties are advertised

Consider broadening your search to neighbouring areas, as this may help you find suitable accommodation more quickly.

Before arranging a viewing, check that the property is suitable for your household and affordable.

2. Tell us about the property

To be considered for support, you must tell us about the property before paying a holding deposit or signing a tenancy agreement.

You will need to provide:

  • the property address 
  • a link to the advert (if available) 
  • the monthly rent 
  • the landlord or letting agent's contact details 

We'll assess the property and contact you within 48 hours with any support that may be available.

3. We'll help you secure the tenancy 

Once you have found a suitable property, we'll work with you and the landlord or letting agent to progress your tenancy.

We check that the property:

  • is suitable for your household
  • is affordable
  • meets the required housing and safety standards

If you are eligible, we may also be able to help with:

  • a tenancy deposit 
  • rent in advance 
  • other agreed financial assistance 

We'll explain the next steps and support you through the process.
 

Tell us about the property before you pay a holding deposit or sign a tenancy agreement. 

We may not be able to provide support if you contact us after you have committed to the tenancy.
