Specialist equipment shop

You can receive specialist help and advice as well as view many items at our equipment shop at the Access Ability Centre. The centre is open on Mondays and Tuesdays between 10am and 4pm and it is best to make an appointment to avoid disappointment. Information about how to contact the centre are in the contact details section at the end of this page.

Equipment for temporary loan or hire

If you have a temporary need for equipment at home, you may be able to borrow equipment from the hospital if you are a patient, or you can contact your District Nurse or Doctor to borrow a commode, bedpan, backrest for the bed and other items like these.

You may also hire equipment such as wheelchairs, commodes, backrests and bed cradles from:

  • Age Concern
    Assists elderly people with minor adaptations such as grab rails and key boxes. There may be a charge.
    Age UK Croydon's Visiting Service needs volunteers (see document below for more details).
  • All Handling (Movability) Ltd
    Open 9am - 5.30pm Monday to Friday and 10.30am - 1pm Saturday. Closed 1pm - 2pm.
  • The British Red Cross
    Open 10am - 12pm Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. A deposit is required for wheelchairs, commodes, backrests and bed cradles plus the weekly hire charge. There is no delivery.
  • Croydon Wheelchair Service
    Long-term wheelchair loan and repair service.
  • Care Providers (bathing and showering)
    Open 9am - 7pm Monday to Friday, 9am - 5pm Saturday
  • Shirley Pharmacy
    Open 9am - 7pm Monday to Friday, 9am - 5pm Saturday, closed Sunday

Equipment for sale in a shop

This information has been compiled to help you find out more about equipment available for hire or to buy and may be helpful to those people who are not eligible for an assessment.

If you are on the waiting list for an assessment and do not wish to wait, you may prefer to buy equipment yourself. In such a case, you will still be entitled to the assessment.

It may be quicker for you to use our online self assessment for disability equipment. This tool will give advice about the type of equipment that may be suitable for you, which you may be able to receive or buy without an assessment.

Hearing aid batteries

Hearing aid batteries are available from the following centres in Croydon:

  • Croydon Hearing Resource Centre
    Open 10am - 3pm Monday and Tuesday and 10am - 2.30pm Friday
    The centre also offers a re-tubing service and provides information on local social groups and lip-reading classes.
  • Croydon Primary Care Trust
    Open 8am - 4.45pm Monday to Friday.
  • Norbury Health Centre
    Open 8.30am - 6pm Monday to Friday and 9am - 11am Saturday.
  • Parkway Health Centre
    Open 9.15am - 4.15pm Monday to Friday.
  • Paxton Green Health Centre
    Open 2pm - 5pm Monday and 9am - 5pm Tuesday and Friday.
  • The Hearing Centre
    Open 9.00am - 12.30pm and 2pm - 4.30pm Monday to Friday.
    A postal service is available and there is also a repair service by appointment only as well as hearing therapy.

Suppliers of Elsan Blue Fluid

Elsan Fluid is used with chemical toilets. It is available in sachets (which are more expensive but some people find easier to use) or one, two or four litre containers. The larger the quantity, the heavier it will be to lift.
