Dead animals

How to report and have an animal removed from a public road.

It can be upsetting to see a dead animal on the roadside, whether it’s a domestic pet or a wild animal such as a fox or badger. If you find one, please let us know so we can remove it quickly.

How to report a dead animal

You can report a dead animal on a public road on Croydon's:

You should give:

  • the exact location (street name, nearest landmark, or postcode)
  • the type of animal (if known)
  • any safety concerns (for example, if it's causing an obstruction)

You can report dead garden wildlife at Garden Wildlife Health.

You must not touch the animal with your bare hands.
If you need to move it, wear disposable gloves or use a plastic bag over your hand. Wash your hands thoroughly afterwards with soap and water.

You must:

  • keep pets and children away from the carcass
  • avoid inhaling near the animal, as decaying carcasses can release harmful bacteria

What happens next

We aim to remove dead animals within 24 hours of receiving a report.

If the animal is causing an obstruction or poses a danger, we will prioritise removing it as soon as possible.

Cats and dogs

If the animal is a cat or dog, we will check for a microchip and attempt to contact the owner.

Large animals

Large animals may take longer to remove because specialist equipment is required.

Dead animals on private land or in gardens

We cannot remove animals from private land or gardens.

You can bury animals in your garden if it does not pose a health risk. Animals must not be buried on public land.
