Voters can choose to vote by post instead of voting at their polling station. You will need to complete a postal vote application form (PDF, 237KB)
Deadline for postal vote applications
The deadline to apply for a postal vote is 5pm, 11 working days prior to an election or referendum. At the governance referendum being held on 7 October 2021 the deadline is 5pm on Wednesday 22 September.
All completed forms can be:
- returned by hand or post to the Electoral Registration Officer, Town Hall, Katharine Street, Croydon CR9 1DE
- scanned and emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org
The application form asks for your date of birth and signature. This is a security measure. When you vote you will again need to give your date of birth and signature and these will be compared against those on your application form to ensure no one else is using your postal vote.
The electoral registration officer may grant you a waiver if you are unable to provide a signature if:
- you are unable to sign in a consistent or distinctive way because of any disability, or
- you are unable to read or write
You will still be required to give your date of birth.
If you want your ballot sent to an address that is different from your registered address, you will need to provide the reason for this redirection.
If you do not provide your date of birth or signature, or you do not give a reason for a redirection, your application will not be allowed.
Once your arrangement to vote by post is in place you will not be able to vote in person at the polling station.
Receiving and returning postal votes
The majority of postal votes will be sent out by first class post around 2 weeks before the election or referendum, although applications received nearer to the application deadline may be sent out slightly later.
Completed postal votes must be returned by 10pm on polling day. A pre-paid return envelope is always provided. They can also be hand delivered to the Town Hall, Katharine Street, Croydon CR9 1DE or handed in at any polling station within the electoral area for the election or referendum.
Postal votes must be returned with the completed postal voting statement or it will not be counted.
Re-issuing spoilt or lost postal votes
We can issue a replacement postal vote pack from the Town Hall, Katharine Street, Croydon, CR9 1DE if yours has been lost, spoiled or has not been received. We can post this by first class or you can collect it from the Town Hall.
If you have spoiled your paper or pack, please bring that with you and we will cancel that pack, or send it back to us if you are having your re-issued pack sent by post. You must bring photographic ID with you if you collect your reissued postal vote.
The deadline to apply for a replacement for a spoilt or lost postal vote pack is 5pm, on the day of an election or referendum.
