Preferred partners chosen to run community bases.
Following the Cabinet approval on 25 September 2024 for the new library service model, we sought community partners and residents to run Community Bases from former library buildings in Bradmore Green, Broad Green, Shirley and Sanderstead library buildings.
Interested parties viewed the buildings and met with local community representatives in October 2024. We engaged directly with ward councillors and local groups such as residents’ associations, regular library users and Friends of the Library groups (where they existed).
The applications were assessed and the following organisations were chosen:
Work is well underway to establish a non-profit Community Interest Company, providing a range of community focused and locally requested activities including; community outreach, meeting room hire, a retained library element, tutoring and neo-natal classes. This Community Hub Supporting Local Residents - Mental Health will be supported by Meadows, a new term-time preschool for children 0 to 4 years. The focus will be on much needed baby childcare and SEND support.
Launched in February 2026, the Asian Resource Centre of Croydon Ltd have established a community-led, volunteer supported hub open 7 days a week. They will ensure that the former Broad Green Library remains a valuable resource for years to come by improving the building’s accessibility, being environmentally responsible and making sure they reflect the needs of disabled residents, families, young people, elders and underserved communities.
The Story Sanctuary Creativity & Community hosts a range of activities, workshops and events for everyone from young to old: art and crafts, gardening and yoga, food and craft markets, social gatherings, and moments of calm. It is a kind, creative place where everyone can feel at ease.
