We are conducting a decent homes survey of private rented housing in the borough to gather information about the building and property conditions.
We are conducting a survey of private rented housing in the borough to gather information about the building and property conditions.
As part of our obligation under the housing act 2004, we will work closely with the borough’s landlords and property or letting agents to ensure that privately rented homes are safe and of high quality.
The surveys have now started and are being completed by independent surveyors from the John Rowan Partnership. During the survey they will visit privately rented homes to gather and record information on building safety, hazards and whether it meets the current Decent Homes standard.
The Decent Homes Standard is a regulatory standard in the Social Rented Sector. The Renters (Reform) Bill recommends this standard is applied to private rented homes and formed part of the July King’s Speech.
We aim to survey 800 to 1000 private rented properties with the surveys continuing up until October 2024.
The surveys will take approximately 45 minutes and surveyors will visit where they have been invited by the tenant. If the survey identifies a significant failing we will make contact with the landlord or property agent so that they are aware and can arrange for the matter to be rectified.
We will use information from the decent home survey to produce a report on the borough’s private rented sector. This report will help the private sector housing team identify any action that may need to be taken.
If you would like to help or have a question please telephone 020 8726 6000 extension 28058 or email LBCpropertyinspection@croydon.gov.uk.
