Winter brings a higher risk of illness, especially for older adults, young children, pregnant women, and people with long-term health conditions.
Flu vaccine
Flu is not just a bad cold. It can lead to serious complications. Getting vaccinated is one of the best ways to protect yourself and those around you. The flu vaccine helps reduce the risk of severe illness and hospitalisation and helps ease pressure on local health services.
For adults
The flu vaccine is offered free on the NHS every year in autumn or early winter to people at higher risk of getting seriously ill from flu.

For children
The children's flu vaccine helps protect against flu. It's offered free to children aged 2 to 3 years, school-aged children (Reception to Year 11) and children with certain long-term health conditions.
COVID-19 vaccination
COVID-19 continues to circulate year-round and can be serious for those with weakened immune systems. Free NHS COVID-19 vaccines are available this autumn.

Keep warm, stay well
Cold weather increases the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and respiratory illnesses. Staying warm not only protects your physical health, it can also help you feel better and more able to cope during the winter months.
Tips to stay warm:
- heat your home to at least 18°C in rooms you use regularly
- wear layers of clothing
- eat hot meals and drink warm fluids
- keep bedroom windows closed at night
- use draught excluders and close curtains to retain heat
- ensure heating appliances are safe and serviced by a Gas Safe engineer
You can also spend time in heated, safe and friendly locations across Croydon that you can visit for free to keep warm.
Looking after yourself and others
Prepare ahead of any predicted cold, snowy or icy weather. Make sure you have any medication you need and check up on any elderly, or vulnerable family, friends and neighbours.
Make sure they:
- have enough food and medication
- are warm and safe at home
- know how to get help if they feel unwell
