Reducing harm from alcohol

Men and women are advised not to regularly drink more than 14 units a week. That’s roughly 6 pints of 4% beer per week or 6 small glasses of wine, where a small glass is 175ml of 13% wine.

Tips

Don't 'save up' your units. Spread your drinking over three days or more if you drink as much as 14 units a week and have regular drink free days.

Keep your short term health risks low by:

  • Limiting the total amount of alcohol you consume in one session
  • Drinking more slowly, alternating with food, soft drinks or water

If you are pregnant, you shouldn’t drink at all!

People under eighteen should not drink alcohol.

New alcohol consumption guidelines were issued in January 2016 to help keep the risk of cancers and other diseases low.
