Support your neighbours

During an emergency, your neighbours are often the first people who can help. Strong communities are built through everyday connections and simple acts of neighbourliness.

Get to know your neighbours

Knowing who lives on your street or in your building can make a difference during an emergency. Introduce yourself to the people living nearby and exchange contact details if appropriate.

Identify people who may need extra support

Think about who in your community may need additional help during a crisis, including:

  • Older people living alone.
  • Families with newborn babies or young children.
  • People with disabilities or health conditions.
  • People who may face language or accessibility barriers.

Share skills and resources

Communities are more resilient when people share knowledge, skills and resources.

It can be helpful to know who has:

  • First aid training.
  • A four-wheel drive vehicle.
  • A backup generator.
  • Useful local knowledge or practical skills.
