Prepare your household for emergencies

Being prepared at home helps you stay safe during an emergency. It also means emergency services can focus on people who need the most support.

Create a household emergency plan

Talk to the people you live with about what you would do in an emergency.

  • Agree where you will meet if you become separated.
  • Decide how you will contact each other.
  • Choose an emergency contact outside London.
  • Make sure everyone knows how to get important updates.

Pack an emergency grab bag

Keep an emergency kit somewhere easy to reach.

 Include:

  • copies of important documents
  • a first aid kit
  • a mobile phone power bank
  • a battery-powered or wind-up radio
  • torches and spare batteries
  • prescription medicines and medical supplies
  • bottled water and basic supplies if possible

Register for priority support

You may be able to get extra support during power cuts and service disruptions if you:

  • are older or vulnerable
  • have a disability
  • rely on electricity for medical equipment
