How to register to vote, types of elections and overseas and service electors.

Election types

  • UK Parliamentary general election – there are 3 Members of Parliament (MPs) elected to represent Croydon - Croydon North, Croydon Central and Croydon South constituencies
  • Mayor of London – a Mayor is elected to represent the whole of London
  • Greater London Assembly – 25 London Assembly Members are elected – 14 represent a constituency area – in Croydon's case, that constituency is called Croydon and Sutton – and 11 are elected on a London-wide basis
  • London Borough of Croydon – 70 councillors are elected across the 24 electoral wards of the borough
  • European Parliament – 8 Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) are elected to represent the London electoral region

Who can vote in each election

UK Parliamentary elections (every 5 years) – British citizens, qualifying Commonwealth citizens (including Cyprus and Malta) and citizens of the Republic of Ireland.

Mayor of London and the London Assembly elections (every 4 years) – British citizens, qualifying Commonwealth citizens (including Cyprus and Malta), Republic of Ireland and European Union citizens - excluding overseas electors.

Local government elections (every 4 years) – British, qualifying Commonwealth (including Cyprus and Malta), Republic of Ireland and European Union citizens - excluding overseas electors.

European Parliamentary elections (every 5 years) – British, Commonwealth, Republic of Ireland (including Cyprus and Malta) and European Union member citizens

In addition, by-elections can take place at any time to fill a vacancy caused by an elected representative resigning, dying or becoming disqualified from office.
