Safe Spaces

How to find a safe space and ask for help, if you feel unsafe or vulnerable while out in Croydon.

Safe Spaces are trusted and welcoming places across Croydon where you can go if you feel unsafe, worried or at immediate risk while out.

Staff at Safe Space venues are trained to provide support in a non-judgemental and confidential way. They will listen, help you feel safe and support you to access further help if needed.

Safe Spaces are free to use and you do not need to make an appointment.

When to use a Safe Space

Safe Spaces are available to anyone, regardless of age or gender. You may wish to use a Safe Space if you:

  • feel unsafe while travelling or in a public place
  • think you are being followed
  • feel under pressure or intimidated
  • need support after a night out
  • are concerned about your wellbeing or immediate safety

How to find a Safe Space

Look for the Safe Space sticker displayed in a venue window or near the entrance. If you are already inside a participating venue, you may also see the sticker on toilet doors or you can ask a member of staff for assistance. You do not need to buy anything before asking for help.

Safe Spaces are provided through a network of participating businesses and organisations across Croydon.
The scheme operates daily between 9am and 11pm, although individual venue opening times may vary. See below.

What to expect in a Safe Space

When you visit a Safe Space, you can expect:

  • support from trained staff
  • access to a safe area within the venue
  • your concerns to be listened to and taken seriously
  • help to contact friends, family or emergency services if needed

Safe Spaces are there to provide immediate support and reassurance while helping you access the assistance you need.
