Coast to Capital Business Navigator Growth Hub
The Coast to Capital LEP area Growth Grant Programme is a capital equipment (capex) grant. The grant provides last resort investment to part-fund projects undertaken by innovative, high growth small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) and social enterprises in the Coast to Capital LEP area. Eligible projects will result in an increased turnover of at least 20% per annum and improved productivity in the company and wider economy.
Applications from all sectors are welcome, but the Programme would particularly like to see applications from companies in the following sectors (identified as key for the Coast to Capital region economy):
- Advanced Engineering and Manufacturing
- Environmental Technologies, Goods and Services
- Creative, Digital and IT (CDIT)
- Healthcare, Medical Technology and Life Sciences
- Professional and Business Services
- Food and Drink Manufacturer
The proposed new activity must be additional to existing business activity.
Businesses must be able to incur the total project costs in full by 31 March 2019. The grant may only be used for capital equipment items.
Please note: start-up businesses and those in the retail/wholesale sector are not eligible for this programme.
- Grants of between £10,000 and £170,000 (subject to de minimis) can be available to businesses, on a match-funded basis
- Equivalent to a maximum of 40% of the total project costs
- Only capital expenditure items are grant eligible
- Applicant businesses will need to provide at least 60% of the total project costs and confirm they have these funds available.
This is a grant of last resort. Applicants will be expected to evidence that they cannot source the gap in project funding from other sources.
To be eligible businesses must:
- Show how the grant will lead to improved productivity resulting in business growth of at least 20% per annum, over the next three years
- Introducing an innovative product or exploiting new technology to access new markets
- Be able to demonstrate that they have fully explored other sources of funding, without success
- Show other investment alongside the grant. The grant can provide up to a maximum of 40% of the total project costs (to a maximum £170,000). Businesses will need to provide the remaining match-funding.
For example, for a total project costing £850,000, the grant could contribute £170,000 (20%) towards the project. The business would need to provide the remaining 80%. Other forms of investment could be; retained profits, loans, shareholders’ investment or equity finance.
- Show how the proposed new activity is additional to existing business activity and to the local economy
- Social Enterprises must show they are adding social value and priority will be given those that can evidence some of the above criteria as well
- Have premises in, or be planning to re-locate in the Coast to Capital LEP areas of:
- Adur & Worthing Borough
- Arun District
- Brighton & Hove
- Chichester District
- Crawley District
- Epsom and Ewell Borough
- Horsham District
- Lewes District
- Mid Sussex District
- Mole Valley District
- Reigate and Banstead Borough
- Tandridge District Council

What happens during a Smarter Business Visit?
If you book an appointment through Groundwork you will receive a visit from a water expert, who will review your business bathroom and kitchen facilities. They will recommend the best solutions for your business and fit water devices suitable for your premises. The visit and any devices we fit are free and will help save water and money from your bills.
We can offer you the following free services:
- Free urinal controls. These will help you identify uncontrolled/inefficient urinals and offer a free installation of urinal sensors where possible.
- Sensor controls where we can offer you a saving of 80% on average when compared with uncontrolled flushing.
- Free installation of water saving products including:
- Ecobeta – conversion of an older single flush toilet to dual flush
- Save-a-Flush – when installed in cisterns over 6 litres in size, this can save 1.2 litres every flush
- Tap inserts – These reduce tap flow rate to 3.5 litres/min
- Showerhead & Showersave – Regulate the flow to 8 litres/min on showers (not suitable for electric showers)

London & Partners’ Business Growth Programme provides tailored advice and support to grow your business. It will help you overcome many challenges at different stages in your businesses’ growth journey, as well as providing access to:

This programme is open to London-based firms with less than 250 employers and a turnover of less than £40 million. Eligible firms must be in the life sciences, digital/tech, creative, media and telecoms sector. This project is part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

City Business Library - The City Business Library provides specialist information resources to start ups and business owners. It is not necessary to be a library member, but members can access some resources remotely. Topics covered include business start-up, export and market research.
The Business and IP Centre
The Business and IP Centre at the British Library at St Pancras has many useful free resources to help business start-ups and is open six days a week, including evenings Monday – Friday. Resources include databases, publications and industry guides, which provide essential information such as competitor analysis and intellectual property basics. Start-ups can also access free and low-cost advice through workshops, webinars and one-to-one sessions. The Business and IP Centre’s website also provides a range of articles on starting your business, protecting your intellectual property and growing your business.

Sussex Innovation Centre help start-ups, scale-ups and corporate innovation projects to succeed with confidence. They provide a range of support services, access to professional networks, and affordable, serviced office space for those who need a base.

Capital Enterprise provides a new free of charge mentoring service for London's ambitious growth businesses. The business mentors are trained and SFEDI qualified senior business professionals, drawn predominately from the City, who are able and willing to provide up to 12 hours of 1-2-1 support to entrepreneurs.
Mentors Me - This is a unique online gateway for small and medium-sized enterprises looking for mentoring services. The free site offers businesses access to a list of quality-assured business mentoring organisations across Britain. An easy-to-use search engine allows businesses to refine their searches according to the life stage of their business and their location in Britain.
The Digital Business Academy, from Tech City UK
The Digital Business Academy is a free online learning platform that teaches aspiring entrepreneurs digital skills. Tech City UK has collaborated with Cambridge University, UCL and the UK government to offer 56 free bitesize courses. There are currently over 20,000 in learning and 60% of their alumni go on to start, join or grow a digital business.
Learners gain certificates to help with job interviews as well as rewards such as fast track to interviews, funding opportunities and desk space.
