Food premises registration is not a licence for your food business, it is a registration of your business with the council. Registration will allow us to keep an up-to-date list of all those food business in our area so that we can visit them when we need to.
Registration of a business establishment is any premises or vehicle or storage units used for a food premises including market stalls, warehouses, delivery vehicles and other moveable structures used in the running of your food business.
All food businesses (however big or small) must register with the council. If you run a food business you must tell us about the premises you use for storing, selling, distributing or preparing food. Food businesses include restaurants, hotels, cafes, shops, butchers shop, supermarkets, staff canteens, kitchens in offices, warehouses, guest houses, voluntary luncheon clubs, day centres, care homes, delivery vehicles, market and other stalls, hot dog and ice cream vans etc.
If you are using a mobile van/unit then you need to tell us where you park it overnight - you need to register the mobile with us if it is parked in Croydon.
Anyone starting a new food business must register with us at least 28 days before doing so.
On the basis of the activities carried out, certain food business are required to be approved rather than registered. Please check the approvals webpage to find out more or you can speak to an food safety officer using the details below.
Application evaluation process
Once we receive your registration form the council will enter the details on its register. The register is open to inspection by the general public. Records of the other information provided will not be publicly available.
Once your application is received, a food safety officer will visit your business. In some cases we will call to make an appointment, however, in most cases we will turn up unannounced.
The purpose of the inspection is to ensure the premises meet the standards required by the Regulation (EC) No. 852/2004 on the hygiene of foodstuffs.
Once we have received the signed registration form your business is registered with the council.
You can register your business by filling in the food business establishment registration form. Registration cannot be refused and there is no charge.
It is an offence to give information which you know is false.
Apply by post /in person
If you prefer to apply by post or in person the form can be downloaded below and once completed sent or brought to the address below at the council.
Changes to your business
Once you have registered with the council you only need notify us where there is a change of owner, where the business changes (e.g. from a retail shop to a butchers shop or a sandwich shop), or where there is a change of the address at where movable/mobile premises are kept. The new owner will have to complete an application form.
Failed application redress
The registration of your food business will not be refused, but officers can legally require you to carry out improvements if you do not meet the standards required by the law.
There are no appeal procedures all premises registration forms will be accepted by the council.
