Street cleaning
A new street cleaning service started in March 2018 and aims to improve street cleaning across the borough.
Report it
If you need to report a problem with the condition of streets and pavements or with street cleaning, do it online in My Account.
You can also download our Don't Mess with Croydon app to report street issues straight to the relevant team.
Standards of street cleaning
We use several methods to keep our streets clean and have invested in new mechanical sweeping machines. The larger sweepers can take up to two tonnes of waste at a time, while the smaller machines are better at working around parked cars. Our officers check that we meet the standards for cleanliness prescribed by the law. The Environmental Protection Act 1990 Part IV brought in a code of practice that sets cleanliness standards for streets and land, depending on location and usage. This has been strengthened by the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005.
Street cleaning includes:
- cleaning pavements and kerbside channels
- cleaning footpaths, pavements and Croydon housing estates
- cleaning surface water drainage gullies
- washing the pavements beneath bridges
- emptying litter bins
- removal of dog fouling
- removal of dead animals
- removal of fallen leaves
- weed control
Street cleaning performance
New, tougher performance targets were introduced with the new contract, including clearing 100% of fly tips within 24 hours of being reported. Our Clean and Green dashboard report focuses on the three main themes of Don't Mess with Croydon; education, enforcement and ease of use.
We monitor the performance level of our contractors using these themes as key performance indicators (KPI's). Our staff meet with Veolia each month to review the progress and results of performance. We also agree any joint action needed to tackle any problems or issues that may have been highlighted by the performance results.
The Clean and Green dashboard report has been designed to provide an overview of performance against targets (where appropriate) and longer term trends across a range of indicators. You can view the monthly performance reports in the download section below.
