Ashburton Hall

In Croydon, we have a number of hidden gems, one being the former convent library building in Ashburton Park. This attractive building which was built in 1882, has become a real landmark in the area and something that local people and park users want to see brought back to life.

After significant council investment, the building has had a complete makeover making it ready for community use. It’s a big space with a lot of potential and we are working to ensure it gets used and enjoyed in the best ways possible.

Naming competition and picnic in the park event

Thank you to everyone who entered the competition to help find a new name for the landmark building.

In all, 50 people contributed 40 different names for consideration. A panel of local councillors and Friends of Ashburton Park reviewed all entries and selected the winning name ‘Ashburton Hall’.

To celebrate the range and depth of local knowledge and history expressed by all who entered the competition, some of the other competition entries have been used to name internal rooms and spaces in addition to the building as a whole.

Unfortunately rain hampered plans for the picnic in the park on 22 July, however it didn’t stop people coming out to enjoy the new name unveiling ceremony, tours of the building, live music and even a bit of face painting!

Room hire and a café for the park

Whilst we are reviewing options for an operator for Ashburton Hall, we are keen to hear from individuals and community groups who are interested in hiring function rooms at Ashburton Hall between late October 2017 and late April 2018. After this date room bookings will be coordinated by the new operator.

We’re also looking into options for a café for the park. This is something park users have told us they feel would be a well-used benefit to the park. Further details on this will be available on this page as soon as they’re available.

Ashburton arts competition

During August and September 2016, we ran a competition calling for budding artists with a love or interest in Ashburton Park or the surrounding area, to get involved and send us their artwork to be displayed on the external hoardings whilst the Ashburton Hall was being redeveloped.

We received a fantastic selection of artwork and our judges chose five winning works of art to display.

As the hoardings are no longer required around Ashburton Hall, they have been moved to surround the pavilion/kiosk.
