History

This small ground was acquired by the Council in 1937 and designed to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of King George the Fifth. It was opened by the Mayor (Alderman Arthur Peters, C.B.E.,J.P.) on the Coronation Day of King George the Sixth. The original equipment was all painted red, white and blue and it is recorded that when the paint firm officials inspected the site they were very impressed. The ground was once a rubbish tip before being transformed into the playground.   There is a kick about area beside the children’s playground which are well used.

Eleanor Shorter Trust

The trust for the grounds were formed on 7th July 1986 to act as Trustees for King George's Field and Haling Grove, located in haling Grove off St Augustine's Avenue, South Croydon.   The Trustees manage the 'interest' generated from 'capital' proceeds resulting from the sale of a bungalow (formally at Haling Grove) on the estate and continue to work with Croydon Council on improving the two parks.   The Trustees consist of representatives of Fields in Trust (FITS), Croydon Playing Fields Association (CPFA) and Croydon Council.
