Many of us experience mental health issues. Usually we can get help by speaking to friends and family, or visiting our GP.
There are a range of services provided in Croydon by the voluntary sector and a full list of these can be found in Mind's mental health information directory.
Sometimes we experience more complex problems with our mental health and your GP may refer you to Croydon Integrated Adult Mental Health Service, a partnership between Croydon Council and the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLAM). View the list of SLAM services.
The Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) offers confidential advice, support and information on health-related matters. It provides a point of contact for patients, their families and their carers. Call 0800 731 2864 for more information.
What to do if you need mental health support or help in a crisis
- if you are already receiving support from mental health services you should follow your care plan, which should include details of who you should contact in a crisis; if you can't find your care plan, contact your community mental health team on 020 3228 6000 and ask for your care co-ordinator
- if you need help but can wait until the next day, your GP should be the first point of contact for help
- if you, a family member or friend are in distress and need urgent help or advice, contact SLAM’s 24-hour mental health crisis line on 0800 731 2864
- if you feel unsafe and need immediate help, go to your nearest hospital with an accident and emergency (A&E) department, where the psychiatric liaison team can help you (24 hours a day, 365 days of the year)
- if you are concerned about an immediate risk of harm - either to yourself or someone else - call 999.
The SLAM crisis line, 0800 731 2864, provides support to individuals experiencing distress. Staff have been trained for telephone counselling. The service offers:
- support from staff listening to the current situation and assessing what may be of help in the current crisis
- advice about available mental health services
- communication with other services or teams on behalf of patients and carers
- support, in a non-directive way, to empower and encourage patients and their carers to take control of their life and come to their own decisions
- non-judgemental emotional support with self-management strategies.
