Assessing your child or young person's needs

If you or a professional feels that a child or young person needs extra help that goes beyond Special educational needs and disability (SEND) support, then you or a professional may request for an Education, Health and Care assessment.

This assessment is used to find out:

  • what your child or young person's special educational needs are
  • what support needs to be put in place to meet these additional needs

This support is will be additional to what your child currently gets in school or any other universal setting.

The assessment may not lead to a plan being issued.

For more information visit the Local Offer's page on the Education Health and Care (EHC) needs assessment process.

How to determine if your child needs an assessment

You should talk to your child's school or nursery to see whether an assessment is appropriate.
