A non dependant is any adult over 18 who lives with you. Grown up children or an elderly relative are examples of non dependants. We may need to reduce the amount of money we pay you but this will depend on the non dependants circumstances.

The amount we deduct for housing benefit (HB) and pensioners is set by central government. The amount we deduct for council tax support (CTS) for people of working age is set by the council. From April 2013 the amounts are shown below.

Circumstances where a non-dependent deduction is not taken

No non-dependant deduction is taken if the person claiming benefit or their partner is:

  • Registered blind
  • Receiving attendance allowance
  • Receiving the care component of disability allowance.

No non-dependant deduction is taken if the non-dependant is:

  • Receiving Pension Credit
  • Aged under 18
  • Aged under 25 who are on Income Support
  • Aged under 25 who are in the assessment phase (first 13 weeks) of ESA (income related)
  • A prisoner.
