Using your Disabled Person's Freedom Pass

Find out how to use your Disabled Person's Freedom Pass

On the gates at most stations, and when boarding buses, you will see a yellow circle which is a card reader. You must touch your freedom pass flat onto the yellow card reader.

When travelling on train services you will need to touch your pass on the card reader when entering and exiting stations.

On buses and trams you will only need to touch your pass on the card reader when boarding.

If you have a freedom pass and a contactless payment card, make sure you keep them separate. If they are together in your wallet or purse, the card reader may charge your payment card for the journey rather than recognising your Freedom Pass. If this happens, please contact TfL Customer Services on 0343 222 1234 to apply for a refund. You will need to advise them of your Freedom Pass number, name and bank details.

Inspections

You should be ready to show your freedom pass to station staff or ticket inspectors if requested.

Letting someone else use your pass

The freedom pass is only to be used by the authorised holder. Do not lend your pass to friends or relatives. If you do, it may result in fines, prosecution and access to a freedom pass being withdrawn.

Keeping your contact details up to date

It is your responsibility to keep your address and contact details up to date. For more information about this, see the section called 'Change of name or address details' on the change of details freedom pass page. Alternatively, you can call the Freedom Pass Helpline at 0300 330 1433 (Monday to Friday, 9 am to 5 pm).

If you do not keep your contact details up to date, or we are unable to confirm your continued eligibility, your pass may be stopped before the expiry date on the pass.

No longer living in Croydon

If you no longer live in the London Borough of Croydon and have moved to another London borough, you must contact London Councils immediately on 0300 330 1433 to inform them of your new address so that your freedom pass account can be transferred.

If you have moved outside the Greater London area, you must contact your new council who will advise you of any travel concessions in their area.

Re-assessment of eligibility

We reassess freedom pass holders on a rolling basis, to ensure that only those who continue to be eligible hold a Disabled Person's Freedom Pass. This is generally every 5 years, but can be sooner based on your circumstances.

Re-assessments can take place at any time; the expiry date printed on your pass does not reflect when your entitlement will end. Your entitlement to a freedom pass may be stopped if you do not respond to the emails or letters we send you regarding your continued eligibility to the scheme.

Lost, stolen or faulty passes

We do not produce the freedom passes, this is done by London Councils.

If your pass is lost, stolen, damaged or has stopped working, you can request a replacement pass by calling the Freedom Pass Helpline at 0300 330 1433 from Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

Depending on the circumstances, you may be asked to contact Croydon Travel Service team before a further pass is issued. Our contact details are below.

Please be aware that London Councils charge a fee for replacement passes. This is currently £14.35.
