Croydon Healthy Neighbourhood Update (February 2023)

We implemented 7 improved Healthy Neighbourhood schemes in September. These provide greater access for residents, carers, licensed taxis, and emergency services. Many of the road closures that were enforced by planters are now replaced by ‘No Motor Vehicles’ restrictions and signs  with agreed exemptions.

The trial Healthy Neighbourhoods aim to improve the lives of those living in Croydon. Healthy Neighbourhoods are residential areas intended to support people live healthy lives. That could mean being more active, breathing cleaner air, getting to know neighbours, getting involved in the local community or living in a more attractive, clean and green neighbourhood environment. Healthy Neighbourhoods consider many factors from the way we travel, through-traffic, the quality of local streets and public and green spaces.

For further details on the schemes please see the relevant links:

The schemes have been installed under Experimental Traffic Management order (ETMOs) for a maximum of 18 months starting from 30 September 2022. For the first 6 months, you can submit objections if the schemes have impacted you. These objections will be considered as part of the assessment of how the experiment has performed.

The 6-month objection period gives people time to experience the effects of the scheme before submitting an objection. The deadline for submitting an objection is 11.59pm on 30 March 2023.

Further public engagement

We want to work with local people to understand what other improvements we can make so that your neighbourhood is a more pleasant, safe, and healthy place to live. There will be events in February and March for you to share views and suggestions around things like:

  • how to make streets easier to cross
  • how to make them more attractive (for example with trees or other planting),
  • dealing with inconsiderate or illegal parking
  • making it easier to park bikes

Activities will include:

  • drop-in sessions
  • community street audits (travelling around the neighbourhood to look at specific issues and opportunities)
  • Resident surveys  ( to be carried out independently of the Council)

After the improvements have had a chance to bed in, we will be surveying residents for their views on the effects of the modified schemes. This is to make sure that we get a truly representative picture of what local people think about the measures and if/how it might be possible to make improvements. We understand many people do not give their views unless asked directly, so we are keen to make sure that as many as possible get to have their say.

Drop in sessions

We will be hosting engagement drop-in sessions, as an opportunity to hear from more residents about the Healthy Neighbourhood trial schemes. They are your opportunity to drop-in, have a conversation with one of the council officers and to give your views and ideas. The sessions will have information boards and maps of the area on display.

Scheme Monitoring

The schemes  which have been introduced will be monitored during the next three months with an aim of completion by end of April. We will publish a monitoring  plan on the main web page  and this will inform you of what we  will be assessing  to gauge the impact of the scheme. The outcome of this exercise will be published when  completed for each individual HN. This, together with the outcome of various events will inform  the future of these schemes.
