Every local planning authority in England is required to maintain a Register of Brownfield Land.
The Register has two parts. Part 1 contains all sites meeting the criteria below:
- has an area of at least 0.25 hectares or is capable of supporting at least 5 dwellings;
- is suitable for residential development;
- is available for residential development; and
- where residential development is achievable
Part 2 of the Register includes those sites contained in Part 1 that the Council has decided to grant planning Permission in Principle for residential development. In order to grant Permission in Principle the Council has to undertake consultation in a similar manner to how it would consult on any other planning application.
