Designation of an area for additional HMO licensing

The London Borough of Croydon designation of an area for additional licensing of Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMO) 2010 comes to an end on 23 August 2015. The Council have to make an application to have the scheme renewed. While this process is being undertaken there will be a lapse in the additional licensing scheme. Landlords and agents who are running a house in multiple occupation (HMO) which requires a mandatory HMO licence, i.e. 5 or more persons in 3 or more storeys need to apply for an HMO licence in the normal way. If your HMO property falls outside of this criteria you will now need to apply for the Croydon Private Rented Property Licence. As these properties still comes within the definition of a house in multiple occupation, landlords still need to comply with any requirements of part one of the Housing Act 2004 and the Management Regulations for HMO’s. A visit to properties will take place once the licence has been applied for.
