Applying for sheltered housing
You should complete a sheltered housing application via the Sheltered housing assessment link in the 'Apply for it' section on the right of this page.
If you are a Croydon council tenant, or a housing association tenant in Croydon you will also need to complete return the housing transfer application form. Tick the box in the section "What type of property would you like to live in?" to say you would like sheltered accommodation.
If you own your property or rent it privately you will also need to complete and return the housing application form. Tick the box in the section "What type of property would you like to live in?" to say you would like sheltered accommodation.
All applicants will need to complete and return a self assessment form. A financial assessment is also included to see if applicants are entitled to any help with the charges. This assessment form will be sent to you when your application is received.
The transfer and application forms are available online (see "Apply for it" on the right ). You can also obtain the forms from Access Croydon at Bernard Weatherill House, our district housing offices in New Addington and Thornton Heath, or by telephoning us on 020 8726 6100.
Once these forms are returned we will assess your suitability for sheltered accommodation.
Sheltered housing is usually open to adults over the age of 60 years, following an assessment of need. However, applicants under the age of 60 will be assessed on an individual basis.
Referrals for sheltered housing can come from many sources including home carers, occupational therapists, doctors, healthcare workers, care managers and other agencies such as Age Concern.
There is a substantial queue of people waiting for re-housing and applicants are placed in bands to reflect their housing need. They are re-housed in date order. The length of time you will wait for an offer will depend on your position in the band and your choice of sheltered schemes. You can see a list of schemes on the "Sheltered Housing Schemes" web page.
