Information about the Nationality Document Return Service (NDRS)

If you have completed an online citizenship application using form AN1 you can use this service to have the supporting documents copied and certified at Croydon Register Office. This means that you will keep your passport and essential documents while your application is being processed by the Home Office.   

You must make an appointment within ten working days of making your online application.

Please note, this is not a checking service. We are only permitted to photocopy your documents and return the originals to you. The copies that we make will be certified and sent by us to the Home Office

Fees and charges

Appointment fees for each applicant (excluding postage)

  • NDRS only:  £45
  • Including Passport application: £60

All fees are inclusive of VAT and the fees reflect the cost of providing the service.

Postage Charges

The postage charge is an additional fee to send one application to the Home Office by Royal Mail Special Delivery.  This charge will be made at the end of your NDRS appointment with us on the day.  The charge you pay will depend on the weight of your application and the number of applicants:

To use this service you must:

  • Have completed an online citizenship application to the Home Office.
  • Be able to attend an appointment within ten working days of making your online application.
  • Attend the appointment in person, however, children under 15 years and 6 months old can be represented by their parent(s) and do not need to attend in person.

You must bring:

  • Your online application confirmation clearly showing your Payment Notification Number.
  • Your original identity document(s)
  • Your completed document checklist with all supporting documents.
  • An original, fully completed referee page
  • (For JCAP) 2 recent passport sized photographs which match the ones on the referee pages Please write your name on the reverse of the passport photographs.
  • An original Life in the UK test certificate

Joint Citizenship and Passport Applications (JCAP)

If you have completed an online application, you can also send your passport application form to the Home Office at your NDRS appointment. This means that your passport will be be sent to you automatically when you become a British citizen. Please read Joint Citizenship and Passport Applications (JCAP) for more information.

Please note these fees are non-refundable if your documents cannot be sent.

Benefits of using the Passport Checking Service with NDRS (This has to be completed as a manual hard copy form which you can collect from the Post Office

  • Provided there are no variations to your name and you are applying using the existing name on your current/expired passport you can use this Passport Checking Service
  • Passports are released to you 30 days after you attend your citizenship ceremony
  • Under Section 2 of the passport form do not enter the mobile number enter this in section 8
  • Under Section 4 only parents details are required not grandparents details
  • Under Section 10 The Counter signatory section does not need completing

An application for a British passport through JCAP is a paper application and attracts the fee in the right-hand column.
