Coronavirus (COVID-19): Please see Coronavirus service updates for the latest information about affected council services

The government has developed a package of support for businesses in response to Coronavirus, including changes to business rates and relief schemes and grants.

Business rates holiday for 2020-21

Qualifying businesses will not have to pay business rates for the 2020-21 financial year. We will apply the changes and issue new zero business rates bills to businesses that qualify. If the business is temporarily closed due to coronavirus, it will still qualify for the business rates holiday.

Retail, hospitality and leisure businesses

Businesses in these industries will qualify for a business rates holiday if they are occupied properties, that are fully or mainly being used:

  • as shops, restaurants, cafés, drinking establishments, cinemas and live music venues
  • for assembly and leisure
  • for hospitality, as hotels, guest and boarding premises or self-catering accommodation

Child care providers

Businesses that provide child care will qualify for a business rates holiday if they are:

  • on Ofsted’s Early Years Register
  • provide early years foundation stage care and education

How business rates bills will be amended

There is no need to contact us if you think that your business will be affected by these changes. We will automatically reduce the amount of business rates that you are asked to pay and send you a new bill.

You should pay your annual business rate bill as normal until we send you a revised bill. Any business rates accounts that are in credit as a result of these changes, will automatically receive a refund. Please make sure our payments team have the correct bank details for this rebate.

Pub relief

If you own a pub with a rateable value of under £100,000, your business relief will increase for one year from £1,000 to £5,000.

Grants

The government is providing grant funding which will be paid to qualifying businesses by local councils.

Small businesses

If your business is eligible and pays little to no business rates, you could receive a funding grant of £10,000.

Retail, hospitality and leisure businesses

Businesses in the retail, hospitality and leisure sectors may be eligible for a cash grant of up to £25,000 per property.

If your business has a rateable value of:

  • up to £15,000, it may be eligible for a grant of £10,000
  • over £15,000 and less than £51,000, it may be eligible for a grant of £25,000

How the grants will be paid

We have contacted businesses who are eligible to explain how to apply for these grants. Grant payments will be made to eligible businesses as soon as possible.

If you haven’t heard from us and think you are eligible, make a business rates grant awards enquiry for more information.

There is no charge to apply for these grants.
