Child cycle training

Cycling increases a child's mobility and independence plus it's good for the environment and a great way to keep fit. Cycling carries a certain amount of risk, but practical training helps new riders develop their cycling skills and increase their confidence. Research shows that trained cyclists are safer than untrained ones.

Parents should remember that training is only the start of safe cycling and that children will need continuous help and guidance.

The Bikeability (National Standard) courses, which are run in schools across the borough during term time and school holidays, are now organised and delivered by Cycling Instructor Ltd. Children are trained through a variety of disciplines and progress from Level 1 to Level 3.

Level 1 and 2 are combined and cover training on cycle control, observation, road positioning and signaling skills. Specifically:

  • training is held over four sessions, each lasting for two hours, with continuous assessment
  • training takes place at schools all year round (term times and school holidays) using school playgrounds and nearby roads
  • children must be 10 or over and provide their own bicycle
  • children receive a badge and certificate stating the level they have achieved
  • cycle helmets are provided for the children to keep

Please note: most senior schools require pupils who wish to ride to school to have taken and passed Level 2 training.

For details of dates and venues of holiday courses, or to book a place on a holiday course, please contact a member of the road safety team (details below).
