School safety zones
As part of the government's target to reduce child casualties, we have initiated a programme of schemes to improve road safety for children on the way to and from schools and in the immediate vicinity of schools.
The proposed schemes are aimed at encouraging the use of other modes of travelling to and from school by promoting, where possible, cycling, walking and the use of public transport rather than the car. To achieve this, we are committed to providing Safer Routes to Schools and School Safety Zones - the last being mainly concerned with safety outside schools.
Public consultations have been held in the following areas:
