Connect2 - A big thank you
A big thank you to all who helped secure £550,000 for walking and cycling in the borough.
The Sustrans Connect2 project won the National Lottery’s People £50 million competition. The project beat three other finalists - The Black Country as Urban Park; The Edge of Eden (part of the Eden project); and Sherwood: The Living Legend - to claim the prize. Each project was the subject of a television programme on ITV1 at the beginning of December 2007, where members of the public were invited to vote for their favourite, online or over the phone.
Sustrans, the country’s leading environmental transport charity, was awarded the £50m grant to fund 79 community-based projects around the country that will bring new local travel routes to peoples' doorsteps. The Croydon Park Links initiative is one of these schemes. We will be handed £550,000 to create a new network of walking and cycling trails in the borough, making it easier for people to walk and cycle to work, school, the shops and green spaces.
The improved travel routes will increase travel choice, support healthier lifestyles and ease congestion and pollution.
Initially, Croydon Park Links will improve links from central Croydon to Wandle Park, the Wandle Trail and open spaces to the east of the borough such as South Norwood Country Park, Ashburton Park and Addiscombe Railway Park. The project has been supported at a local level with events held to raise awareness of the scheme in the run-up to the competition. We will now be working with the local community and Sustrans to develop the detailed design of the routes and implement the project.
