Dog fouling
Clean up after your dog
Unfortunately, there are dog owners who act irresponsibly and do not clean up after their dogs. To promote responsible dog ownership and reduce the nuisance and health problems associated with dog foulings, we have adopted The Dogs (Fouling of Land) Act 1996 under which it is an offence if the owner or person in charge of a dog fails to clean up their dog's faeces from designated land within the borough of Croydon. These areas include:
- all roads with a speed limit of 40mph or less
- public footways
- grass verges
- pedestrianised areas
- housing land
- some parks and open spaces.
Not having a poop scoop or other means of removing the faeces, or being unaware of the legislation, will not be considered an acceptable excuse under this Act. which carries carries a maximum fine of £1,000.
People who are registered blind are exempt from the Act.
We have placed signs throughout the borough to alert dog walkers of their responsibilities.
Please help
We receive many complaints about problems caused by dog fouling, but as it is difficult to witness and prove we rely on the help of the public.
If you witness a person not cleaning up after their dog has fouled a public space:
- try to find out which dogs and their owners are causing the problems - but do not put yourself at risk
- note the times and dates of the incidents, with a brief description of the dog and the owner. Please be prepared to provide a statement, if required.
Incidents of dog foulings not being removed from public spaces, or those needing to be removed from a public footway, should be reported to the council using the details below or the online reporting form.
