Speed reduction and traffic calming
Pillow or cushion humps are speed control features designed to reduce the speed of traffic but not impede the progress of emergency vehicles and public transport. Several humps are placed closely together so that vehicles with longer wheelbases, such as buses, ambulances, fire trucks and lorries can drive over them without difficulty whereas vehicles with average wheelbases, such as cars, vans and small trucks, are forced to slow down.
This type of speed cushion is intended to overcome the objections of emergency services and London Transport while reducing car speed in roads that would otherwise not have traffic-slowing measures.
