Speed reduction and traffic calming
- Chicanes and throttles

- Kerb build outs

- Road humps and tables

- Rumble strips

- Speed cushions

Chicanes and throttles are intended to reduce traffic speed by reducing the width of available carriageway for a short length.
Chicanes introduce a physical deflection into the horizontal path of traffic, causing vehicles to reduce speed. A trial of chicanes in Woodcote Valley Road in 1994 successfully reduced traffic speeds, but as they were deemed unacceptable by local residents and emergency services, they were subsequently removed.
Throttles narrow the road to provide a safe crossing point for pedestrians. They are often used in conjunction with a speed table. These features may also form the "entry" or "gateway" to a traffic calming scheme.
