Kerbcraft
The council was successful in obtaining a Department of Transport grant to implement a three-year pilot programme of the 'Kerbcraft' Child Pedestrian Training Scheme at selected schools in the borough. The pilot has been completed but we are continuing the scheme through its own resources.
'Kebcraft', which is based on practical roadside training, teaches children three sets of progressive skills over a 12-week period. It is designed for Reception, Primary 1 and Primary 2 pupils and is taught by trained personnel.
The skills taught are:
- recognising safe roadside locations and how to make up routes that avoid dangers such as parked vehicles, sharp bends and hills
- crossing near parked cars (when no alternative is available)
- understanding the principles of crossing near different kinds of road junction.
Children are trained to travel safely and independently. However, the training is not designed to enable children to go out on their own once the course has been completed.
Local schools are being invited to participate in the scheme.
