Priority junctions

Some junctions in small residential areas have no form of priority marking; that is, they don't show clearly who has the right of way. Where possible, these junctions are being marked, under maintenance and upgrading programmes, to show which arm of the junction should give way.

Other junctions may have:

  • a give way line
  • a give way line and triangle marking
  • a give way line, triangle marking and give way sign.

Junctions where a greater impact on motorists is desirable may have a Stop sign and marking. Strict rules relating to visibility distances of approaching traffic must be met before a Stop" sign can be introduced.

See the Highway Code for penalties for not stopping at a Stop sign.

One of the most common causes of accidents is failure to give way.
