Weight limits
Area lorry bans (weight limits)
Area lorry bans prevent goods vehicles over a particular weight, usually 7.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight, from travelling through an area. They can also restrict heavy vehicles at points where the road is not strong enough to support them, for example, a weak road bridge.
All vehicles over 7.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight must carry a plate, on the driver's cab, stating the weight of the vehicle.
Exceptions to this ban are for goods vehicles loading or unloading from premises in the area.
Area bans are enforced by signs only, which are placed around the boundary of the area.
Area bans are not self-enforcing and may be subject to abuse by irresponsible drivers.
