London Borough of Croydon

Sweltrac

The South and West London Transport Conference (SWELTRAC) is a proactive partnership of eleven local authorities, Transport for London, bus and train operators, freight, business and passenger interests and Railtrack. Croydon lies at the eastern end of the study corridor and will gain improvements to the interchange at West Croydon between bus, tram and heavy rail.

SWELTRAC's vision is to improve transport interchange performance, public transport access to town centres and centres of employment, promote social inclusion and help achieve a reduction in congestion and atmospheric pollution through less use of private vehicles.

SWELTRAC's goals are to:

  • reduce car dependancy and the need to travel by providing attractive and sustainable alternative modes of transport and implementing traffic restraint measures
  • provide for safe and efficient movement of people and goods
  • improve the local environment and quality of life for all
  • improve public transport accessibility by enhancing integration through better interchange and increased public transport availability
  • promote economic regeneration and social inclusion by improving sustainable accessibility for all travellers to town centres, business parks, schools and tourist attractions.

The lead authority for the SWELTRAC project is the London Borough of Richmond.
