South-East London Transport Strategy

SELTRANS - The South East London Transport Strategy - was formally set up in February 1998 as a partnership between the seven London boroughs of Bexley, Bromley, Croydon, Greenwich, Lambeth, Lewisham and Southwark, transport providers and operators, and business and passenger interests to improve bus and rail services, to reduce dependence on the car and increase accessibility to jobs.

The area also has high levels of social deprivation and unemployment. Many people are relatively disadvantaged in getting to jobs, shops and community facilities. It is therefore vital to provide more and better public transport and interchange facilities allied to a variety of traffic and restraint measures. This will ease congestion, help economic regeneration and sustain town centres. The aim is to increase public transport patronage by 50% over the next ten years.

SELTRANS objectives:

  • To provide public transport initiatives as a viable alternative to the use of the car to reduce traffic congestion, improve urban environment, help economic regeneration and sustain town centres.
  • To develop traffic restraint measures complementary to the initiatives in Objective 1 in order to reduce car use and encourage use of environmentally-friendly forms of transport - bus, rail, walking and cycling.
  • To provide for safe and efficient movement.
  • To increase accessibility and sustainability in order to serve the existing and future land uses in the area.
  • To improve public transport interchange facilities to allow easy transfer between modes.

The SELTRANS project has been allocated funding of £2.4 million over the last 2 years and will receive £2.0 million for the coming year. In Croydon this funding has been used to improve bus access to West Croydon Bus Station, introduce bus stop clearways, signs, markings and red surfacing at bus stops, and will be used to develop South London Metro, orbital hubs, signage and travel information centres, Tramlink accessibility, Central Croydon public transport improvements, Disabled Access Way-Marking Scheme and East Croydon bus passenger facilities.
