Why Croydon takes parking enforcement seriously

There are compelling road safety and traffic reasons for parking laws, such as:

  • Without parking laws many parts of Croydon would grind to a halt.
  • Few motorists like to admit that their indiscretions are illegal and should be punished.
  • A practical, commonsense approach is needed to carry out parking enforcement.
  • Parking laws should be known by everyone who drives.
  • Illegal parking can damage pavements, kerb stones, verges, trees, and underground services. Repair costs have to be met by council tax payers.
  • Collecting or dropping off passengers in bus stop clearways might only take a minute but can inconveniences buses, cause traffic congestion and endanger passengers.
  • Parking for longer periods than paid for is cheating and deprives other motorists of parking space.

Our parking attendants prefer co-operation from motorists to issuing a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN).

Park properly - and avoid a ticket!

Bank Holiday enforcement

Parking controls will be in force on all Bank Holidays with the exception of Easter Sunday and Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

Police and Traffic Wardens

We are responsible for enforcement of most parking restrictions with the exception of the following, which are the responsibility of the police and traffic wardens:

  • parking on a Red Route (except where permitted). The borough's two Red Routes are the A23 and A232.
  • parking on white ziz-zag markings, for example on the approach to a pedestrian crossing (parking attendants will also take action in yellow line areas).
  • double parking next to a car parked against the kerb (parking attendants will also take action in yellow line areas).
  • parking that causes an obstruction, particularly across a resident's driveway or junctions not provided with yellow lines.
