CCTV pilot scheme
On Tuesday 22 July 2008, Croydon Council will begin a one-week trial of a CCTV smart car to help keep the borough's roads clear and children safe.
The high-tech car, fitted with a CCTV camera on a periscope, will be used to monitor parking on pavements and illegal parking around schools, in addition to other parking contraventions.
The car is clearly marked with the council's logo, displays traffic enforcement camera logos, and is operated by trained staff. Where appropriate, staff will also issue Penalty Charge Notices.
Assuming a successful trial period, the council intends to acquire a permanent CCTV smart car to compliment long-term planning programmes to ensure we reduce all types of road traffic violations and accidents.
Feedback from other London boroughs is that the smart cars actually improve people's view that parking enforcement is fair.
