Purley Regeneration

Introduction

Croydon Council has been working in partnership with Transport for London, local residents, the business community and representatives of local groups and organisations, to prepare a draft Regeneration Strategy for Purley Town Centre.

The  Regeneration Strategy has been prepared to address issues associated with the economic and environmental decline of the Town Centre.

Location

The Regeneration Strategy applies to Purley Town Centre as illustrated below:

Purley Town Centre has been experiencing economic and environmental decline and no longer provides to the community as wide a range of services as used to be the case.  This is evident by

  • A heavily congested road system which makes visiting and living in Purley unpleasant.
  • A public realm which restricts pedestrian access and movement.
  • An unattractive streetscape.
  • A declining local economy evident by the number of vacant shops and lack of diverse retail outlets.
  • A gap in the provision of community facilities.
  • A negative public image which discourages inward investment.
  • Limited opportunities for the community to meet and socialise.

Four areas of activity have been identified in the Strategy which include:

  • Movement and Transportation Network
  • Environmental Quality and Amenity
  • The Local Economy and Community Facilities
  • Inward Investment and Development

Community Consultation

Community consultation played an important role in the preparation of the  Regeneration Strategy Consultation events included the Purley Planning Day in May 2002, meeting with businesses in October 2002, the exhibition of road options in January 2003 and regular Neighbourhood Partnership Meetings.
